Dealing With The Reality Of The Challenge
By Michelle B Peters

So you've gotten to the point where you have developed your business plan, listed your goals, and/or identified a target date to officially leave your job to pursue your dream. Part of you screams,"Yikes! What have I gotten myself into?" The other part brims with excitement and is ready to tackle what lies ahead. The reality is that a lot of hard work is what lies ahead.

You will work harder getting your business started, or bringing your dream to reality than you've ever worked before. The payoff will be great when you make your first sale, secure your first client, draw your first commissioned design, submit your book to the publisher, or get that dream job. Try not to let the list become your task master. Break it down into manageable bits and small goals. As the old saying goes," Rome wasn't built in a day." Pledge to take stock at the end of each week and end of each month to reflect on all that you have accomplished. You will be surprised at all you achieved and checked off that list. In addition to that satisfaction, you will feel your confidence sky rocket as you realize the challenges you successfully met and the ways you were stretched outside your comfort zone over the last month. You can do it! You are doing it! It is only a matter of time before clients, deals, bookings, and offers are pouring in.

Laying the groundwork for you business should be fun. The last thing you want is for it to become drudgery or perfunctory. Didn't you choose this path because you were passionate about it? Keep the passion alive by being light hearted about the adventure. Plan celebrations to mark the steps you take toward actualization along the way. When you've successfully checked 2 or 3 things off of your list, plan to meet friends for drinks or dinner at your favorite restaurant. Toast to what you've achieved so far.

Another idea is to create a contest for your friends and family to create a winning tag line for your business. It will be a great way for you to share and hone your message with your closest allies and potential referral partners. You may also find that you have some really creative friends and family. Lastly, when you're tempted to let all the things piling up on your desk or the myriad tasks in your Blackberry overwhelm you - stop, step back, and see the day for what it is, full of opportunities and possibilities. Be in the moment and be ready for the potential that is just around the corner.

To your success,
Michelle
