Working From Home

For those of us who have to do the school runs and generally make sure we are around when the kids come home being able to work from home is an ideal situation. Not all employers are so flexible so sometimes the only solution is to start a business from home.

This has become quite an attractive proposition for some, especially for those who will be basically working on their own and don't need to run an expensive office. They have no employees to worry about. Also if you are traveling out to clients then there really is no need to carry the extra overheads of an office. With the advent of the pc and other technological advances it is easy to have everything you need at home. And even if the client needs to come to you there is much less stigma attached to working from home than there used to be.

That's great for those with the skills to do that. I'm thinking of accountants, web designers, secretarial services, consultants and the like. What about those who aren't able to set up in this way. The arrival of Ebay and in general the Internet means it is fairly straightforward to set up an online business selling to a worldwide customer base. You don't need expensive retail premises; you can start off small and build from there. Of course you might run out of space for your stock but even then you could rent a small storage space. There are lots of new companies sprouting up offering these services.

A lot of people say they can't work from home. They would be distracted by the television and other things. They wouldn't be able to get in the right frame of mind. Some have to put on the shirt and tie to feel like they were going to work. That's as maybe, but with rising fuel costs and the increases in traffic working from home maybe the only way we get things done.
